The Technical Safety BC (formerly BC Safety Authority) conducts an exam to verify, when successfully passed, the competence of any person who performs work on irrigation related low voltage valve or sensor wiring, or low or high voltage system power or controller wiring.

Requirements to qualify to take such exam include an approved 24 to 30 hour Electrical Code Book Course and 1800 hours or one year of suitable work experience under a Certified Field Safety Representative, Class LO, Low Energy Systems. The FSR must in turn be, or be employed by, a Licensed Electrical Contractor who has posted a bond with the Safety Authority.

The Electrical Contractor must obtain a permit for each significant project which necessitates a call for inspection when work is completed. The Safety Authority conducts public education programs as well as in field inspection and enforcement due to the hazard potential of inadequate materials or workmanship.
