An irrigation system is a long-term investment. Design and installation problems may not become apparent until after the contractor has left the property.
Reliable coverage, appropriate water use and efficient service depend on who designs the system, who completes the work, what qualifications they hold and whether the company can support the property over time.

The word “certified” can describe a business designation or a qualification held by an individual designer, technician, auditor or backflow tester. These credentials are not interchangeable.
- Is the company recognized as a Certified Irrigation Contractor?
- Who will design, install and service the proposed system?
- Which current certifications does each person hold?
- Can the qualifications be verified through the issuing organization?
A professional contractor should clearly distinguish company credentials from individual qualifications and explain which ones apply to the proposed work.
2. Identify who will design the system
Professional irrigation design involves much more than selecting sprinkler locations. The designer must coordinate the available water supply with the landscape, equipment and long-term service requirements.
- Available pressure, flow and hydraulic losses
- Pipe sizing, sprinkler spacing and operating pressure
- Matched precipitation rates and irrigation-zone design
- Slopes, drainage, soil, sun, shade, wind and plant needs
- Controls, sensors, backflow protection and winterization
- Component access, future growth and long-term maintenance
For estate, strata, commercial and multi-zone systems, the designer’s qualifications and experience can materially affect performance for decades.
3. Ensure different landscape conditions are addressed
Lawns, slopes, shaded areas, native planting, trees, shrubs and planters rarely require identical watering. Areas with incompatible needs should be separated wherever practical.
- Sun and shade exposure
- Slopes, drainage and soil infiltration
- Turf, planting beds, planters and native areas
- Spray, rotor and drip precipitation rates
- Microclimates and seasonal scheduling needs
- Existing and future plant growth
Poor zoning frequently causes one part of a property to be overwatered while another receives too little.
4. Review the proposed products and their purpose
The proposal should identify the principal components and explain why they suit the property. Product selection affects water use, reliability and the ability to obtain parts years later.
- Controller, valves, sprinklers, rotors and nozzles
- Drip equipment, sensors and backflow components
- Pipe, fittings and service-access locations
- Manufacturer support and replacement-part availability
- Compatibility with locally stocked service inventory
Quality products still require a coordinated design. Ask whether the contractor’s service vehicles routinely carry the parts being installed.
5. Understand who will install and service the system
The experience of the estimator or owner does not necessarily reflect the experience of the people who will complete the field work.
- Who will supervise and perform the installation?
- Are permanent irrigation technicians employed?
- Will any portion of the work be subcontracted?
- Who will test and commission the completed system?
- Who will return for corrections or warranty work?
- Is qualified service capacity available during peak season?
Long-serving technicians retain valuable knowledge about local conditions, property history and the installation practices that make future service easier.
6. Verify licensing, insurance and responsibility
Confirm that the contractor has the business licensing, insurance and workers’ compensation coverage appropriate for the project.
- Current business licence
- Commercial general liability insurance
- Workers’ compensation coverage
- Licences required for any regulated work
- Responsibility for permits, inspections and declarations
- Clear identification of work assigned to another trade
An irrigation contractor is not automatically qualified to perform every associated electrical, plumbing or backflow task. Responsibility should be defined before work begins.
7. Establish how electrical work will be handled
Controllers, transformers, low-energy field wiring, sensors and pumps may involve regulated electrical work. Vague assurances are not a substitute for qualified oversight.
- Is regulated electrical work included?
- Who is authorized to perform and declare the work?
- Is a permit or inspection required?
- Who will obtain the permit?
- Will another electrical contractor be involved?
- Are the electrical costs included in the proposal?

An irrigation connection can require backflow-prevention equipment to protect the potable water supply. Requirements depend on the property, system, water source and authority having jurisdiction.
- Does suitable backflow equipment already exist?
- Who will supply, install and test it?
- Is initial testing included?
- Is ongoing annual testing or reporting required?
- Who will maintain and submit the records?
- Are repair or replacement costs clearly addressed?
Where testing is required, it should be completed by a qualified tester using approved, currently calibrated equipment.

Property-specific records become more valuable as the landscape changes and the system is repaired, expanded or upgraded.
- Controller model and programming information
- Zone descriptions and valve locations
- Water-source and backflow-equipment details
- System sketches, plans or digital as-built records
- Pipe and component information
- Startup, service, repair and winterization history
Good records reduce diagnostic time and allow future visits to build on established property knowledge.
10. Ask what happens after installation
A system still requires spring startup, seasonal programming, repairs, landscape adjustments and winter protection after construction is complete.
- Is ongoing service and seasonal management available?
- How are urgent or routine service requests handled?
- Are suitable staff and parts available during peak season?
- Will property records be retained?
- Can the contractor provide required backflow testing?
- Who is responsible for winterization?
Long-term support is especially important for seasonal residences, stratas, hotels, commercial sites and complex landscapes.
11. Read the warranty carefully
Warranty terms should be specific and written. A headline warranty period does not explain which products, labour or service costs are actually covered.
- Workmanship-warranty period
- Manufacturer product warranties
- Labour for a warranted replacement
- Travel or service-call charges
- Damage and alteration exclusions
- Who administers claims and expected response times
A warranty has practical value only when the contractor has the local presence, staffing and operating history to support it.
12. Evaluate local service capacity
Whistler and Pemberton have a concentrated irrigation season. Local staffing, inventory and response capacity matter when demand is highest.
- Where are the technicians based?
- How many qualified service people are available?
- Are service vehicles stocked locally?
- Does the company already maintain nearby properties?
- Is service provided throughout the full season?
- Will repeated travel from another community affect response or cost?
The lowest initial price may not produce the lowest long-term cost when service is delayed, unfamiliar or dependent on parts that are not readily available.
13. Consider client and staff continuity
Years in business are useful, but the length of client relationships and employee tenure can reveal more about consistency and long-term support.
- How long do typical service clients remain?
- Does the company still manage systems it installed?
- How long have key technicians been employed?
- Are relevant local references available?
- Does the company work repeatedly with established managers and trades?
A technician who knows the original design, repair history and recurring concerns can make better decisions than someone encountering the property for the first time.
14. Compare the complete proposals
Final prices are meaningful only when the proposals cover the same scope. Ask for clarification wherever an item is excluded, provisional or assigned to another trade.
- Design responsibility, zone count and intended coverage
- Controller, equipment and pipe specifications
- Water connection, backflow and electrical work
- Permits, inspections, sleeving, coring and trenching
- Landscape restoration, testing and commissioning
- Documentation, warranty, exclusions and ongoing support
- Taxes, contingencies and allowances
The objective is not simply to choose the highest or lowest proposal. It is to understand exactly what each contractor is committing to deliver.

Confirm these points before selecting a contractor.
Company
- Legal company name and current business licence are identified.
- Liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage are confirmed.
- Operating history, local references and ongoing service capacity are clear.
Qualifications
- Company and individual certifications are distinguished.
- The designer and technicians are qualified for the proposed work.
- Electrical and backflow responsibilities are assigned to qualified people.
Design
- Pressure, flow, hydraulics, spacing and precipitation rates are addressed.
- Sun, shade, slopes, soil, planting and future growth are considered.
- Component access and long-term maintenance have been planned.
Proposal
- Major equipment, connections, permits and inspections are identified.
- Restoration, commissioning, documentation and exclusions are clear.
- Warranty terms are written and comparable.
Long-term support
- Startup, seasonal management, repairs and winterization are available.
- Replacement parts and property records will be maintained.
- The contractor can support the system locally over the long term.
